Pulau Semak Daun is one of the islands in the Pulau Seribu Regency, or Thousand Islands, just offshore from Jakarta. I’ve visited a few times, mid week it is normally empty, except for the one caretaker who lives on the island, but weekends and public holidays, I’ve heard it can get particularly busy.
It is a practically deserted tropical island roughly the size of a large football field. It has some spectacular coral, a few young mangroves and a lovely sandy beach. Five years ago any boat arriving had to stop on the beach and passengers would have to leap overboard into the water and wade ashore, however, they have since built a small jetty so you no longer have to.
You can access this island from other islands in the Pulau Seribu area (Thousand Islands), such as Pulau Pramuka (Pramuka Island) which is the capital island of Pulau Seribu regency. Just hire a small boat for the day for a few hundred thousand rupiah.
This island is perfect to relax, swim and see some coral and sea grass (breeding ground for Sea Turtles. Bring your own drinks and water, but please, take them off the island as well.
