Halfway down the coast of New Ireland in Papua New Guinea there is a woman who feeds eels for tourists. Cathy Hiob, used to be an international air hostess with Air Niugini but decided it would be more fun to look after eels at her village, Laraibina, which is about a 45 minute drive from Kavieng in the New Ireland Province. (actually she told us her mother died, and her tribe was matriarchal, which meant she had to go home to take over!)
You can stop for a lunch or overnight as Cathy also operates accommodation for backpackers which mainly caters for the cyclists and divers whom frequent New Ireland. She’s a very friendly lady and happy to chat for hours over a cup of tea. However, be warned, she really does she them as her pets and does not appreciate anyone making jokes about eating eel for lunch!
