In any area of Jakarta you can find small little villages, known as kampung small houses, side streets called gangs, and plenty of street life going on around you. Poor does not mean dirty, just interesting. Homemade shacks, banana plantations nestled alongside rivers, tollroads, under major power lines and train tracks. Where ever there exists space, some enterprising Indonesians will set up shop and home, often made of the rudest materials, scrap lumber, metal sheets are enough to build a house.  Continue reading

Sultan’s Palace in Cirebon

Children’s Fun: Playparq

20141019_124500Playparq have a number of venues, Kemang, Bintaro, Epicentrium and I think a couple more planned. They are a small kids play park and Bintaro and Kemang have water play areas also. Indonesia celebrates Idul Adha peacefully

Once a year animal stalls begin to pop up around Jakarta as animal vendors make their way into the city to sell cattle and goats for sacrifice. Last Sunday, Oct 5th, (or Saturday Oct 4th if you are a Muhammadiyah muslim, they can never quite agree on dates) was Idul Adha, one of the biggest Islamic holy days of the year in Indonesia, the Islamic Day of Sacrifice.  Continue reading
